Superintendent Spearman Announces Third Teacher of the Year Finalist

State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman surprised Gaffney High School teacher, Erin Fox, in her classroom with news that she has been selected as one of five finalists for the South Carolina Teacher of the Year award.

"Erin knows the importance of ensuring every one of her students has not only the knowledge but also the integral life skills and characteristics that are needed to be successful after high school," said State Superintendent Molly Spearman. "Erin is a leader not only in her field and profession but also in her community and I am looking forward to her continued leadership and success."

Erin Fox is an English teacher at Gaffney High School in Cherokee County School District.  Erin pulls from her dramatic, dance and musical background to create dynamic lessons and units for her students.  In her roles as a teacher and cross country coach she ensures that her students are challenged everyday.  She strives to teach them “an inner drive” that will carry them further than just a 5K course, classroom, or school year. Erin also believes in the necessity of optimal health and wellness and the positive overall effects it has on student achievement and success.

"Mrs. Fox is an incredible teacher and a perfect representative for our profession.  She encourages and motivates her students to be their very best and she truly leads by example.  Mrs. Fox stimulates her students academically, athletically, and artistically.  Her classroom comes alive when she begins to teach and her delivery and style captivate her students.  Mrs. Fox is the epitome of a great educator and Cherokee County School District congratulates her, salutes her, and wish her all the best in this process to be the best teacher in South Carolina," said Cherokee superintendent Dr. Quincie Moore.

As one of five finalists, Fox will receive $10,000 and go on to the next stage of competition which involves an in-person interview with a team of expert judges. The South Carolina Teacher of the Year Gala will be held May 3rd in Columbia.  The overall winner receives a total of $25,000 and gets to drive a brand new BMW for one year while advocating for the teaching profession across the state.

The Teacher of the Year program celebrates excellence and strengthens the teaching force by honoring and recognizing exceptional teachers on a district, state, and national level. These awards not only assist in retention efforts but serve as a powerful recruitment tool.

The South Carolina Teacher of the Year serves for one school year as a roving ambassador providing mentoring, attending speaking engagements, working with teacher cadets and teaching fellows, leading the State Teacher Forum, and serving as the state spokesperson for over 48,000 educators.
