South Carolina Department of Education Announces Launch of Summer Food Service Program

  • Jun 13, 2017

The South Carolina Department of Education is pleased to kickoff the annual Summer Food Service Program which serves FREE nutritious meals to ANY child under the age of 18 at community sites across the state.

"I am so excited about this year's Summer Food Service Program that will provide millions of meals to children across our state, said State Superintendent Molly Spearman. "I am looking forward to continuing the program's success and strengthening the partnerships with our parents and community sites in South Carolina."

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the South Carolina Department of Education. SFSP sites began operating earlier this month and will offer free, nutritious meals to children 18 years of age and under through August 11.

This year, over 1,500 summer food sites are located in schools, churches, recreation centers, camps, parks and many other community facilities across South Carolina. Last year, the SFSP served over four million meals. In addition to nutritious meals, many of the sites provide fun summer learning opportunities and activities that help keep children active and combat summer learning loss.
