Educator Prep Guidelines

  • Jun 5, 2017

The South Carolina Department of Education has partnered with the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) through the Network for Transforming Educator Preparation (NTEP) and various education stakeholders to revise and update the guidelines related to educator preparation.

The focus of this work has been to ensure that all Educator Preparation Providers (EPPs) in South Carolina are reviewed and evaluated using a rigorous accreditation and approval process. The goal of this work is for EPPs to produce high quality teachers for South Carolina P-12 schools who are classroom ready on day one of their professional careers. SCDE seeks feedback on the draft of the revised guidelines from external stakeholders to ensure that the changes made are relevant and reflect best practice in educator preparation and P-12 schools. An evidence guide will be developed to accompany the revised guidelines.

Below is a list of significant changes made in the guidelines:

  1. Inclusion of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation Standards;
  2. Program approval criteria for non-traditional EPPs;
  3. Alignment to the new South Carolina Teaching Standards 4.0;
  4. Explicit criteria related to field and clinical experiences;
  5. Updated criteria for program admission; and
  6. Modifications to the requirements for middle level preparation.

The review period begins on June 2, 2017, and ends at 5:00 pm on June 23, 2017. We welcome your feedback as it will strengthen the revisions currently proposed and the final document which is scheduled to be presented for approval to the State Board of Education in August 2017.
