Chunk Assignments/Assessment Into Manageable Pieces

An accommodation changes how information and concepts are presented or practiced ensuring that each student has the opportunities and support needed to learn. Accommodations do not reduce the learning expectations and should be chosen based on the student’s individual needs and not applied arbitrarily to all MLs. Accommodations are not to be viewed as an advantage to the student; accommodations provide access to the content for the student.

Accommodations:

  • Provide access to grade-level curriculum;
  • Alter the environment, not the curriculum;
  • Do not change the learning outcomes;
  • Happen in the content-area classroom; and
  • Should not impact grading, though how learning is assessed may change.

Description

This accommodation allows teachers to chunk or break up instructions/assessments, so the student has the appropriate time to process material effectively. Chunking assignments also offers more opportunity to add visual aids and increase communication by increasing processing time.

What it looks like, with a navy blue eye logo The teacher divides the content into manageable chunks of information with time to process and make connections between their home language (L1) to the target language (L2). The student does not feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they must process in one lesson, and thus does not fatigue as easily.

When should the accommodation be removed?

The Chunking Instruction and Assessments accommodation should be removed once an ML can organize their work load efficiently and complete longer tasks without reaching cognitive fatigue easily, or no longer require frequent checks for understanding. Most MLs do not require Chunking Instruction and Assessments beyond the Developing level (3), but some students occasionally require this accommodation through the Expanding level (4). If you have questions, or feel your ML requires a change in their ILAP regarding this accommodation, please reach out to the Multilingual Learner Program Specialist (MLPS) in your building to discuss the student's needs.
