African American History Resources

The purpose of the African American History program, as referenced in legislation (S.C. James Edwards Civics Education Requirement

Districts can use their discretion in the administration and grading of the assessment then report the results directly to the Education Oversight Committee (EOC) through the summer report card survey completed annually by school and district leaders. The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) does not administer, score or evaluate the assessment. Students who are currently in their freshman year of high school should complete the assessment in their Government course prior to graduation.

Please refer to the links below for information regarding administering the Civics test.

Document-Based Questions (DBQs)

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) partnered with the University of South Carolina (USC) using funds from a federal grant from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). This collaborative project trained teachers to use the USC Digital Collections and South Carolina Digital Library (SCDL) materials and they created document-based questions (DBQs) for students to engage with historical records and develop their digital literacy skills. These DBQs were aligned to grades 3,4,5,8, and USHC as seen in the 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards but could be modified by teachers for use to support instruction of the 2019 South Carolina Social Studies College- and Career- Ready Standards.

The SC Digital Academy page at USC contains DBQs created during the summer of 2018 with earlier DBQs realigned with the 2019 South Carolina Social Studies College- and Career-Ready Standards.
