A Spartanburg District Five student is playing a happy tune this week, after being named the state's top band student! Matthew Powell, a senior at James F. Byrnes High School in Spartanburg District Five, was named Outstanding Bandsman of South Carolina for 2016. The award, given annually by Phi Beta Mu International School Bandsman Fraternity, recognizes students who exhibit excellence in band and all academic areas. Powell was honored with the award at the All-State Band Clinic last weekend at Furman University in Greenville. The senior trumpet player was also drum major of the Byrnes Rebel Regiment marching band this year. Congratulations, Matthew Powell!
