Leaders Making Readers: Summer Reading Camp Symposium

  • Feb 26, 2018

The South Carolina Department of Education is partnering with several other organizations to host the Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camp Symposium from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday, February 28th, at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2), located at 763 Fashion Drive in Columbia.

This event is a FREE day of learning, sharing and developing best practices for Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camps in 2018. It will feature nationally-renowned education leaders/authors Jan Burkins and Lester Laminack.

Representatives from school districts and community partners will share their knowledge and expertise about creating a greater impact in Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camps through topics including data-driven instruction, increasing parent engagement and other best practices.

"A student’s reading ability is the greatest predictor of educational and lifelong success. As educators, we must work closely with parents and our community partners to support our struggling readers and give them the tools and resources needed to be successful. Our summer reading camps are critical piece in this effort and I look forward to discussing how we can strengthen and grow this important program,” said State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman.

In an attempt to improve statewide literacy rates among children, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley signed Act 284 (Read to Succeed) into law in June 2014. The Act instructs school districts to analyze young learners who are not on grade reading level and provide them with additional intervention and supports including the chance to attend a summer reading camp. The 2017-2018 school year is the first year in which third grade students not reading on grade reading level will be held back, unless they meet certain exemption criteria.
