State Board of Education approves updates to Model Safe School Checklist

The State Board of Education held a special-called meeting on July 12 to update guidelines for ensuring safety in South Carolina schools. Public school districts in South Carolina are required to complete the annual Model Safe School Checklist and submit updated plans to the state Department of Education by Sept. 1 each year. Districts also must work with local law enforcement, and when necessary, state law enforcement agencies in order to ensure that the district has an updated plan in place.

National Merit® Scholarship Winners

Today’s release is the second announcement of winners in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. On April 27, about 1,000 recipients of corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards were named, and on June 1 and July 11, some 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners will be announced. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,500 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $28 million.

State Superintendent Molly Spearman Selected for SCASA Lifetime Achievement Award

State Superintendent Molly Spearman has been named as a 2022 recipient of SCASA's Lifetime Achievement Award. Each year SCASA selects exemplars of educational leadership to receive the SCASA Lifetime
Achievement Award. These leaders have dedicated their lives to educating South Carolina’s children,
serving their communities, and providing an example for those who aspire to lead.
