While traditional pathways require the completion of an educator preparation program through an accredited college or university of higher learning, this by no means excludes those with differing backgrounds from achieving South Carolina Educator Certification. Alternative certification programs allow potential educators, who meet the eligibility requirements, to obtain certification and teach in South Carolina public schools. Most alternative certification programs lead to issuance of a Professional, renewable certificate upon program completion.
To be eligible for an alternative certification program, all applicants must first meet the following requirements in addition to any requirements set by the program:
Each alternative route certification program has a unique set of procedures, both for enrollment and certification eligibility. The following is an overview of approved programs available in South Carolina:
PACE is designed to allow career changers to enter the teaching profession in a PACE approved subject area aligned with their conferred degrees or completed coursework. Over a three-year period, qualified PACE participants work toward full certification while teaching in their content area.
In order to qualify for enrollment in the PACE program, the following minimum requirements must be met:
Individuals who have participated in, but not completed, other alternative certification routes in South Carolina may not be eligible for participation in PACE. If you have participated in another alternative program recognized in South Carolina, please contact the Office of Educator Services prior to initiating the application process for PACE.

The America Board is a non-partisan non-profit 501(c)3 organization established by the United States Department of Education. In June 2007 the South Carolina General Assembly passed the American Board for the Certification of Teacher Excellence Act, which allows state public school districts or charter schools to hire individuals who use the American Board process to obtain a South Carolina teaching certificate.
An applicant who has earned at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and who qualifies for the Passport to Teaching certificate issued by the American Board in the areas of biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, physics, or science may apply for a one-year alternate route certificate upon verification of an employment offer as a teacher in a South Carolina public school. This alternative route certificate may be renewed annually for two additional years upon verification of successful teaching.
To advance to a standard South Carolina Professional certificate (a renewable teaching certificate that is valid for a five-year period), the American Board candidate must complete the induction and summative evaluation requirements of the state’s system for Assisting, Developing, and Evaluating Professional Teaching (ADEPT) and must pass the appropriate Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) assessment offered through the Educational Testing Service.
Detailed information regarding the American Board process, including the required tests and fees is available on the organization’s website at www.americanboard.org.
Once American Board certification is received and all required American Board assessments are completed, educators may Apply for South Carolina certification through the American Board Program.
