2019 College- and Career-Ready Standards for Social Studies
The 2019 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Social Studies grades 4-12 were approved by the State Board of Education on January 8, 2019, while grades K-3 were approved on May 14, 2019.

Founding Principles Act
S.C. Code Ann. § 59- 29-155 requires instruction on certain founding principles of the United States into required studies of the United States Constitution.
James B. Edwards Civics Education Initiative

South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Social Studies and Civics Standards Public Review
As a result of the dedicated efforts of a team of South Carolina educators from school and district levels, consultants from institutions of education and research, Social Studies representatives from the Office of Assessment and Standards, as well as partners from the Office of Special Education Services, the Office of Leadership Effectiveness, and the Office of Government Relations & Policy, the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Social Studies and Civics Standards are now available for public review and feedback.
The public review period will begin on September 9, 2026, and conclude on October 9, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Public comments must be submitted through the online survey form.

Accessing the Standards Document within the Survey Platform
The draft Social Studies Standards are available within the survey platform. Participants may review the standards in their entirety before providing ratings or feedback.
To access the standards:
- Open the survey.
- Enter your email address and select your role.
- Choose a grade band or standards set to review.
- On the following page, locate the last underlined word, “here,” displayed in blue font. Selecting this link will open the full standards document for the selected grade band.
- To review additional grade bands or the Disciplinary Reasoning Standards, use the back arrow at the bottom of the page to return to the selection screen.
Important: You may enter the survey and review the standards without submitting feedback. Responses will not be recorded unless you click the Submit button at the end of the survey. This allows stakeholders to review all standards prior to deciding whether to provide ratings or comments.
