Professional certificate renewal procedures are determined by an educator’s current employment status.
Educators employed in South Carolina public school districts should submit all certificates of completion, official transcripts, and other renewal documentation to the employing district's Human Resources Office. The designated renewal coordinator in the district office has access to South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) certificate records and may renew a certificate directly. Renewal requests submitted by South Carolina public school district employees directly to the Office of Educator Services will not be accepted.
Educators employed in a South Carolina Renewal Entity should submit all certificates of completion, official transcripts, and other renewal documentation to the employer's designated renewal coordinator. The renewal coordinator is trained to provide renewal advisement and will submit a Renewal Computation Sheet to the South Carolina Department of Education to award renewal credit for eligible activities. If you are unsure who your employer's renewal coordinator is, please contact the Office of Educator Services and this information will be provided.
Educators employed by an office of the SCDE are eligible to receive renewal credit for activities they complete in addition to expected duties. To qualify, a director or deputy must verify that the activity was successfully completed and was not a requirement for the educator's employment position. Please complete the SCDE Employee Request for Renewal Credit Approval form and attach supporting documentation for review.
Example employers include private schools, out-of-state schools, institutes of higher education, daycares, nurseries, private companies, non-education settings, or third-party education contractors.
