Ms. Maya Slaughter

Maya Grace Slaughter is honored to represent the First Circuit (Calhoun, Dorchester, Orangeburg). Maya is a native of Orangeburg County, where she attended public schools and graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.  She obtained a B.A. in Political Science from Boston College and completed coursework at Harvard University and the American University of Kuwait.

Maya received her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law and is currently a licensed attorney practicing at the law firm of Williams & Williams Attorneys at Law in her hometown of Orangeburg, SC.

Maya obtained her teaching certification through the Rutgers University, Graduate School of Education. She taught various Elementary Education courses, including Reading, Writing, and Social Studies, in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Maya also worked in Early Childhood Education, serving as a Family Services Coordinator and Pre-School Instructor for the OCAB (Orangeburg, Calhoun, Allendale, Bamberg) Community Action Agency’s Headstart Program. Because of her passion for education and education policy —Maya has worked in several roles which impact those issues, including several state and national campaigns and as the Policy Development and Communications Director for a statewide legislative caucus.

Maya feels privileged to serve on the State Board of Education and looks forward to advocating for and representing the needs of teachers, students, and their families in South Carolina.
