Charter Schools Program Planning and Implementation Grant 2020–21

Description

The purpose of the Charter School Program (Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act [ESEA]), as stated in the federal authorizing statute and non-regulatory guidance, is to increase the national understanding of the charter school model by (1) expanding the number of high-quality charter schools available to students across the nation by providing financial assistance for the planning, program design, and initial implementation of charter schools; and (2) by evaluating the effects of charter schools, including their effects on students, student academic achievement, staff, and parents.

Eligible Applicants

New charter schools that have received approval from their chartering authorizer (sponsor) to open in the 2020–21 or 2021–22 school year may submit grant applications for this funding round.

A new charter school applicant that has not yet received an approval/denial determination from its authorizer (sponsor) may also submit a grant application. However, to receive subgrant funds, an applicant must be officially approved by an authorizer (sponsor). Funds will not be awarded until the approval is confirmed.

A charter school in the first year of operation may apply for an Implementation Only grant for up to 24 months.

Approximately $10 million

Funding Detail

Maximum award of $800,090 for Targeted applicants and $698,320 for Typical applicants.

24 months for Implementation Only grants

Technical Assistance Session

A pre-application technical assistance session will be offered via Adobe Connect on May 7, 2020, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. No password is required to join the session. Participants should enter their full names when logging in to the session. Participants will be able to log in 30 minutes prior to the start of the session to test their equipment’s audio and video settings and to download/print handouts. While participation is not mandatory in order to submit an application, it is highly recommended.
