Charter Schools Program Planning and Implementation Subgrant 2021–22

Description

The purpose of the Charter School Program (Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act [ESEA]), as stated in the federal authorizing statute, is to expand opportunities for all students, particularly traditionally underserved students, to attend charter schools and meet challenging State academic standards; provide financial assistance for the planning, program design, and initial implementation of public charter schools; increase the number of high-quality charter schools available to students across the United States; evaluate the impact of charter schools on student achievement, families, and communities; share best practices between charter schools and other public schools; encourage States to provide facilities support to charter schools; and support efforts to strengthen the charter school authorizing process.

Eligible Applicants

New charter schools that have received approval from their chartering authorizer (sponsor) to open in the 2022–23 or 2023–24 school year may submit subgrant applications for this funding round.

A new charter school applicant that has not yet received an approval/denial determination from its authorizer (sponsor) may also submit a subgrant application. However, to receive subgrant funds, an applicant must be officially approved by an authorizer (sponsor). Funds will not be awarded until the approval is confirmed.

A charter school in the first year of operation may apply for an Implementation-Only subgrant for up to 24 months.

Total Funding Available

$8 million

Funding Detail

Maximum award of $1,000,000 for Targeted applicants and $850,000 for Typical applicants.

Project Term

36 months for Planning and Implementation subgrants
24 months for Implementation-Only subgrants
