Description
The purpose of the Charter School Program (Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act [ESEA]), as stated in the
federal authorizing statute and
non-regulatory guidance, is to increase the national understanding of the charter school model by (1) expanding the number of high-quality charter schools available to students across the nation by providing financial assistance for the planning, program design, and initial implementation of charter schools; and (2) by evaluating the effects of charter schools, including their effects on students, student academic achievement, staff, and parents.

Eligible Applicants
New charter schools that have received approval from their chartering authorizer (sponsor) to open in the 2020–21 or 2021–22 school year may submit subgrant applications for this funding round.
A
new charter school applicant that has not yet received an approval/denial determination from its authorizer (sponsor) may also submit a subgrant application. However, to receive subgrant funds, an applicant must be officially approved by an authorizer (sponsor). Funds will not be awarded until the approval is confirmed.
A
charter school in the first year of operation may apply for an
Implementation Only subgrant for up to 24 months.

$10 million
Funding Detail
Maximum award of $800,090 for Targeted applicants and $698,320 for Typical applicants.
Project Term
36 months for Planning and Implementation subgrants
24 months for Implementation Only subgrants
