Lexington, SC – State Superintendent of Education Molly M. Spearman announced that Sheryn Billue, a teacher at Lexington High School in Lexington School District One, is a finalist for the South Carolina Teacher of the Year award.
“I am so proud that Sheryn discovered her passion for teaching while serving our country on active duty in the U.S. Army,” said Spearman. “She is an inspirational educator, a role model in her community, and a great example of a service member who has successfully transitioned into the classroom,” said Spearman.
Sheryn Billue is a 10th-12th grade Mathematics teacher at Lexington High School in Lexington School District One. She worked as a Staff Meteorologist for the United States Army and discovered her love for teaching while volunteering at a local high school. Billue’s experience in the military made her aware of the need for more women in technical fields. She addresses this need through her role as a mentor to young women and participation in programs like “Aspirations in Computing” that aims to increase female participation in technology careers.
The state’s winner receives $25,000 and gets to drive a brand new BMW for one year while advocating for teachers across South Carolina.
