SC Youth Risk Behaviors Survey (YRBS)

The YRBS has been conducted in South Carolina in high schools every other year since 1991 and in middle schools since 2005. The surveys, conducted in the spring of odd-numbered years by The Office of Student Intervention Services at the SC Department of Education, is part of a national effort to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States. These behaviors, often established during childhood and early adolescence, include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Unhealthy dietary behaviors
  • Inadequate physical activity
  • Alcohol and drug use
  • Sexual behaviors that contribute to HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies
  • Behaviors that contributed to intentional and unintentional injury, including suicide
