"I teach students to think for themselves. For instance, I do not test the students on the characters in Macbeth; they have already been assessed on this through quizzes. Instead, I give my students an excerpt from a Shakespeare play that we haven't read in class, ask them to read it and then ask questions based on the standards that were originally taught through our Macbeth units. It is imperative that we teach students to think for themselves so they will be successful citizens and be able to make decisions. Teaching students to think critically also allows me to show them real world connections to what we are studying."

Tate earned a bachelor of science degree from Appalachian State University and a master of English/education from Converse College. She holds International Baccalaureate certification and is National Board certified.
